The Drunk’s Logic: Why Search Where the Light Is Better?

Share

One evening, a kindhearted passerby spotted a drunk man crawling beneath a streetlight, desperately searching the pavement. “Lost something?” the good Samaritan asked. “My Rolex,” the man slurred, explaining he’d tripped and the watch had flown off his wrist.

The helpful stranger immediately joined the search, scouring the illuminated pavement for nearly ten minutes before thinking to ask, “Where exactly did you fall?” “About half a block that way,” the drunk pointed into the darkness.

Baffled, the helper asked why they were searching under the light if the watch was lost elsewhere. The drunk blinked slowly before delivering his flawless logic: “The light’s better here.” Sometimes the most earnest efforts are undermined by the simplest oversights—especially after one too many drinks.
