A Child’s View of Faith

Every Sunday, young Tommy went to church with his grandmother. She was a kind woman who wanted to teach him about their faith. One week, she decided it was time for his first confession. She explained he would go into a small booth to talk to the priest.

Tommy was nervous but he agreed to try. He walked into the confessional and sat down quietly. The priest slid open the window and smiled at him. Tommy whispered the words his grandma taught him to say.

He began to list his small mistakes from the past week. He admitted to stealing a pencil from his classroom. He said he used a bad word and lied to his mother. The priest told him that wasn’t too serious.

Then Tommy remembered a few more things he had done. He confessed to throwing his sister’s doll out the window. He also put toothpaste on his grandfather’s false teeth. The priest tried hard not to laugh at these funny confessions.

He gave Tommy a light punishment of three prayers. Tommy felt very proud as he walked out of the booth. His grandma was waiting for him with a warm smile. She asked him how everything went during his first confession.

Tommy grinned from ear to ear with great confidence. He told her it was easier than he thought it would be. But he wasn’t sure the priest knew half of what he had done. His innocent perspective brought a sweet lesson about honesty.
