My Dog’s Secret Life as a Rabbit Mother

Share

I’ll never forget the day I discovered what my dog had been hiding in the barn. It began with frustration—my garden ravaged night after night—and ended with one of the most profound lessons about love I’ve ever witnessed.

Runa, my independent shepherd mix, had been different since losing her puppies. She spent hours alone in the barn, barely responding when I called. Then one morning, drawn by a strange whimpering, I found her behind some crates with two tiny baby rabbits pressed against her. My tough, squirrel-chasing dog was nursing wild bunnies as if they were her own.

The dead mother rabbit nearby told the rest of the story—she’d been the “thief” stealing vegetables to feed her babies before her tragic end. And Runa, who knew the pain of maternal loss, had stepped in without hesitation.

Watching her care for those bunnies changed me. The neighbors laughed when I told them, but I saw something sacred—animals crossing species lines to care for one another. When the rabbits eventually hopped away, Runa didn’t chase them. She simply watched them go, her job done. Now when I work in my garden, I leave out extra greens. Because sometimes, the most beautiful things grow from the unlikeliest beginnings.
