Heartbreak at UW-Platteville: Two Lives Cut Short

Share

A quiet Monday afternoon turned tragic at UW-Platteville when gunfire echoed through Wilgus Hall. Two students—Kelsie Martin and Hallie Helms—lost their lives in what authorities believe was a targeted incident with no other suspects involved.

Martin, a resident advisor studying psychology, had reportedly gone to check on Helms, who appeared distressed. Tragically, the situation escalated violently. The university quickly implemented emergency protocols, canceling classes and offering counseling to shaken students.

Martin’s family remembers her as an exceptional student with dreams of becoming a social worker. Helms, an education major, is recalled for her artistic talents and love of video games.

As the campus mourns, a GoFundMe for Martin’s family has surpassed its goal, showing the outpouring of support. Both families have planned memorial services to honor their daughters’ legacies.
