For starters, most of the “teenagers” at Rydell High were actually in their late 20s and 30s. Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was 33, Olivia Newton-John (Sandy) was 29, and Jamie Donnelly (Jan) was 30. Only John Travolta, at 23, was close to being an actual teen.
And that legendary carnival scene? It wasn’t filmed on a studio lot—it was shot at a real, operating fair. The cast rode the rides and ate cotton candy between takes, making the energy feel totally authentic.
One of the biggest surprises? “You’re the One That I Want” wasn’t even in the original Broadway show. It was written last-minute for the movie—and thank goodness, because it became one of the most iconic duets in history.
