Text Messages and Familial Tip Led to Arrest in High-Profile Political Assassination

New details have emerged regarding the investigative steps that led to the arrest of Tyler Robinson, the prime suspect in the killing of political commentator Charlie Kirk. The break in the case came from two parallel streams: digital evidence from a shared residence and a critical tip from within the suspect’s own family. The FBI confirmed that Robinson shared an apartment and was in a romantic relationship with Lance Twiggs, a 22-year-old from St. George, Utah, who is described as transgender. While Twiggs is cooperating and is not charged, seized text messages between the two provided crucial intelligence.

According to an affidavit, these communications detailed operational plans, including instructions on retrieving a hidden firearm, specifically mentioning covering it with a towel and monitoring the drop location. The texts also discussed modifying the weapon with a scope and engraving the bullets, indicating a high degree of premeditation. This digital evidence was pivotal in building the timeline of the suspect’s actions. The investigation took a decisive turn when Robinson’s father recognized his son in the publicly released FBI photos of a person of interest. Confronted by his father, Robinson allegedly confessed to the killing but stated he would rather die than turn himself in.

This prompted the father to contact a local youth pastor, who also serves as a court security officer. Together, they attempted to persuade Robinson to surrender. The U.S. Marshals Service was subsequently alerted and took Robinson into custody without incident late Thursday night. The suspect now faces preliminary charges of aggravated murder, discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. The physical evidence, including a recovered bolt-action rifle and uniquely engraved ammunition, is undergoing intensive forensic analysis at the FBI laboratory as the investigation into motive and potential co-conspirators continues.
