My Mother-in-Law’s Dangerous Obsession

They say you don’t just marry a person – you marry their family. I learned this the hard way after wedding my childhood sweetheart, Michael. What began as a fairytale reunion quickly turned sinister in his family’s ancestral home.

The warning came in the form of his mother’s journal, filled with stories of a supposed family curse that targeted wives. At first I dismissed it as superstitious nonsense, but then the “accidents” started. My car brakes failed mysteriously. Important documents disappeared. Strangers called my clients with damaging lies.

The final piece fell into place when I overheard Michael’s mother boasting on the phone about running off another daughter-in-law. My hands shook as I realized – she had been systematically destroying every woman who married into the family, disguising her cruelty as “bad luck.”

That night, Michael made the hardest choice of his life. With tears in his eyes, he confronted his mother and chose me over family tradition. We left before sunrise, driving until the ocean blocked our path. Now, when I hear the waves outside our little cottage, I’m reminded that some curses are just people – and people can be left behind.
