If your dog has suddenly developed red, circular marks on their stomach, don’t panic—it’s probably just black fly season.
Veterinarians in Alberta recently took to social media to ease pet owners’ worries after a surge in calls about these bites. The marks, caused by black flies, are common in spring and usually disappear on their own. Dogs pick them up while lounging outdoors, especially in grassy areas.
Though the bites look unpleasant, they rarely cause discomfort. However, experts warn that not all red spots are harmless. Fleas, allergies, or skin infections can also cause similar marks, so monitoring your dog’s behavior is key. If they scratch constantly or seem bothered, a vet visit is best.
For now, many dog owners are relieved to know that nature—not an emergency—is likely to blame.
